Have Baby, Will Travel

Baby Abigail is free to travel the world!  She now has an official United States of America Passport!!  Just came in the mail this past weekend.  The hardest part of the whole process was getting her to hold still long enough to look into the camera for her picture, have her eyes open and not have any other body parts (like my hand for example) in her picture.  After about 10 tries she nailed it!

In the 8 years that Cynthia and I have been together we’ve made it a point to take at least one big trip every year.  We like to travel to places that are slightly off the beaten path and for us traveling is a way to challenge ourselves and connect with each other in ways that we aren’t able to when we’re at home.  Here’s where we’ve been:

2005:  Argentina – Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Iguazu Falls.  This is the trip where we decided to move in together!

2006:  Turkey – Istanbul, the Mediterranean Coast and Cappadocia.  We got engaged in Istanbul.

2007:  Banf and the Canadian Rockies.  Probably one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been.

2008:  Hawaii for our honeymoon!

2009:  Peru and Bolivia.  Challenged ourselves with a 3 day trek to Machu Picchu.

2010:  Ghana.  Volunteered at an orphanage with 75 kids.

2011:  Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland.  Traveled European style – by train!

2012:  ???

As you can see, travel has been a big and important part of our relationship and now that Abigail is part of our family we want to include her in our adventures.  Of course, the idea of traveling with a baby under the age of 1 (now that I know what this actually involves) seems a bit more daunting than it did when we talked about it hypothetically last year.  Certainly around the logistics but also the disruption it will cause to the baby’s fragile routine.  But in a weird way though, I’m looking forward to it and think the challenge will be good for us as a family.  And, we’re not quite ready (I’m not sure I’ll ever be) for the Disney vacation.  So we’re just gonna go for it!

This year our first trip with Abigail will be to Ecuador!!

Stay tuned for more as get closer to the date (this Fall).  I’m sure there will be A LOT to write about!!

  1. I am hearing more and more about babies getting passports, and I have to say that I LOVE that people are not as scared to travel with their infants as they used to be. My husband and I are fairly well-traveled as well and I can’t wait to go on tour with our little gal as soon as we can raise the funds! I very literally want to give my daughter the world, and through travel this is possible.

  2. My parents live in Australia, which is a 7 hour plane journey from us. We flew our daughter over to meet them when she was about 5 months old. We were so scared, but it was not that bad! She was so good, no crying or anything. And she easily settled back into a routine over there. I’ve heard horror stories, but we were very lucky!
